With the Artemis missions, the United States will maintain its leadership in space exploration and space science, propelling exploration of the Moon and beyond. Protection from solar radiation storms is essential for humans to live and work safely in space. In January 2022, NOAA and NASA signed an interagency agreement to facilitate NOAA’s space weather support to NASA for the conduct of all human space flight missions. This is a continuation of NOAA support for NASA that dates back to the early years of our Nation’s human space flight efforts. And in recent years, human space flight extends beyond NASA, as commercial spaceflight companies have successfully launched humans into space on orbital and suborbital spacecraft. New research and improved space weather models and observations over the past decade have produced advances in our ability to forecast space weather, but many challenges remain. In this talk, we will discuss NOAA's latest development and future plans in support of human space exploration.
