Advances in weather forecast modeling, powered by high performance computing, saves lives and billions of dollars of property. To achieve this, complex workflows are optimized to meet the scientific requirements, data-centric realities, and increasing HPC capabilities. Workflow requirements and complexity continue to increase and there is a growing need for predictions in areas where weather is just one component of a complex system. Examples include wildfire predictions and understanding coastal impacts - which require greater model resolution as well as the need to ingrate diverse data across multiple science domains to exploit emerging AI techniques. Additionally, organizations must exploit an increasingly diverse computational ecosystem while meeting financial budgets and energy efficiency goals. At this session, we will hear from industry experts and NOAA who will discuss evolving needs and challenges to support operational predictions.
