This invited panel will discuss how StoryMaps have been used to explore and integrate tribal heritage, sustainability, knowledge and science through the visual language of geography. It will also serve as a catalyst to share how others can use the StoryMap platform to create their own narratives. Since 2015, the Esri StoryMap Challenge has been supporting members of indigenous communities to share their narratives on subjects ranging from tribal leaders and change makers, historical and cultural preservation, solutions for addressing tribal challenges, and scientific approaches and contributions of tribal communities. The StoryMaps also integrate tribal ecological knowledge (ITEK) with conventional forms of science and information including in situ and satellite observations, environmental and earth system models, and GIS technology. The StoryMaps highlight how ITEK and conventional knowledge and science can be used together to provide a more holistic approach to decision making.
