Host: Convergence Science: Indigenous Weather, Water and Climate Knowledge Systems, Practices and Communities
Chair:
Julie Maldonado, Livelihoods Knowledge Exchange Network/Rising Voices, Goleta, CA
Moderator:
Eileen L. Shea, CASE Consultants International, Asheville, NC
Panelists:
Robbie E. Hood, NOAA/NESDIS, Office of Systems Architecture and Advanced Planning and ISS, Inc., Silver Spring, AL and Diamond Tachera, National Center for Atmospheric Research, Honlulu, HI

The final session of the Symposium will focus on identifying opportunities for AMS Members and the Society as a whole to collaborate with Rising Voices and indigenous communities in the emerging arena of convergence science to address changing weather, water, and climate conditions. Like the lunchtime mentoring Session, this will be a highly interactive, participatory discussion involving both invited identified panelists and Symposium participants.  Discussion will focus on the essential role of relationship building in successful convergence science endeavors. Rising Voices panelists will provide their insights into some keys to success including those identified in previous AMS Indigenous science sessions. Symposium participants will share their experiences, insights, and ideas for effective partnership in weather, water and climate-related convergence science.  In addition to being recorded, Symposium organizers will explore the idea of co-authored article (perhaps for BAMS) to share insights and recommendations.

Representatives from each of the Day’s Panels and AMS leadership (including past, present, and incoming Presidents) will have an opportunity to highlight their initial thoughts on opportunities for an expanded partnership with AMS and its public-private partners and Members.  In addition, advancing knowledge and services related to changing weather, water and climate, this Session can also explore opportunities related to environmental justice, inclusion and diversity, and strengthening respect for special/sacred spaces and natural resources. Following any questions  for the Panel, all Symposium participants will be invited to offer their ideas for the future in a facilitated brainstorming session.  The ideas shared will be recorded, captured, and compiled.  In addition to providing a record of the Symposium, the findings and recommendations of the day will be used to help guide the continuation of convergence science Symposium at the AMS 105th Annual Meeting.

Since this will be the final session of the Symposium (and the 104th Annual Meeting), participants will be invited to remain together to discuss next steps and emerging partnerships in a more informal, relaxed environment.  Symposium organizers will be exploring a small reception or other opportunity to build new friendships and explore ideas as the day flows into evening.
