Host: 19th Symposium on Societal Applications: Policy, Research and Practice
In August 2022, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) released updated guidance mandating that federally-funded research must make their publications and data open, free, accessible, and public. In response, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Program Office (WPO) Social Science Program and the Natural Hazards Center (NHC) at the University of Colorado Boulder co-hosted a Workshop on Open Data and Reuse in Social Science Weather Research in April 2023. The Workshop provided an opportunity to share the new policy guidance with the social science weather research community, discuss new advancements in social science instruments and data publication infrastructure, and provide training and mentoring for data publication. The Workshop focused on several themes related to the new guidance, including sharing the new policy and challenges to publishing and reusing data, brainstorming solutions to overcome these challenges, and co-developing recommendations for next steps. This listening session will highlight emerging Workshop findings and recommendations, and invite the broader natural hazard and disaster research community to share their thoughts and feedback.
