Session Techniques and Methodologies for Multi-Scale Micrometeorology

Description:

Surface-atmosphere interactions are central to the understanding of the current and future evolution of weather, climate, and earth ecosystems. Surface fluxes averaged over a large area are the quantities often required for model inputs and/or validation (i.e., downscaling and upscaling modes). However, this presents a challenge as the analysis of turbulence data with Eddy-Covariance is best understood only within a specific set of surface and flow conditions in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and is often limited to specific levels within the ABL. Such ideal conditions are not always representative of the local surface and flow properties, nor of the spatial and temporal variation of the fluxes owing to these properties. Even with surfaces classified as the same type, local flux values can vary considerably.

This session focuses on assessing methodologies, techniques, new instruments, or array of instruments ground- or unmanned platforms connecting micrometeorological observations to the estimates of large-scale regional fluxes determined by climate models, ecosystem-earth systems models and/or remote sensing-based model retrievals of turbulent fluxes.

Presentations regarding established and novel techniques and their potential use in the field and networks are welcome.
