Session Improving Representation of Processes in Earth System Models for Weather and Climate to Address Systematic Biases

Description:

Weather and climate models continue to suffer from systematic bias. Many are related to missing or inadequately represented physical processes, which are caused by shortcomings in the model physics. It is essential to pinpoint and comprehend the reasons for physics-induced biases and then to enhance the overall model/forecast performance that can be justified on physical grounds.

This session aims to bring together researchers/scientists across the community who work on a range of numerical modeling/infrastructure advancements for model physics. Abstracts are encouraged to highlight work conducted 1) by various physics developmental and assessment groups, 2) in field campaigns that leverage observing infrastructures to constrain parameterized processes, and 3) by testbeds and operational centers. The session echoes the theme of this year “Towards a Thriving Planet: Charting the Course Across Scales ” by fostering a better understanding of fundamental issues in cutting-edge models and exploring potential solutions.
