Session Advancements in Hydrologic Modeling: Integrating Surface and Subsurface Hydrology across the Atmosphere-Land-Ocean Continuum

Description:

Advancements in hydrologic modeling include all topics with process-based models from hillslope and sub-surface processes to hydraulics. Recently the role of human disturbances and plant hydraulics have also been shown to have a more critical role in regulating evapotranspiration and water balance. It is crucial to enhance land surface models by incorporating these components, laying the groundwork for consistent integration of soil hydraulics, plant hydraulics, and river hydraulics. Field databases, satellite remote sensing, and numerical modeling have previously considered these elements individually. This session brings together researchers in these individual areas to share the latest developments in model development, calibration, data assimilation, and practical applications. These applications include aligning with weather/climate models and drought/flood monitoring, as well as coupling the water cycle with energy and carbon cycles across scales, from local to regional to global. Machine learning methods for developing parameterizations and utilizing data to inform space missions are also welcome. We encourage studies related to recent advancements in hydrological modeling, including but not limited to the integration of hydraulics.
