Session Setting Forth: Early Career Opportunities in Operational Government Meteorology and Hydrology

Description:

Like all journeys, a career begins with a first step—getting your foot in the door.

Entry-level positions in operational government meteorology and hydrology are notoriously competitive, with conventional knowledge suggesting that being hired for one of these roles often requires advanced degrees or prior experience via volunteer programs, internships, or jobs in other sectors. As such, some students or early career professionals without such experience may feel that entry-level jobs in this sector are out of reach—that the metaphorical door is locked, and they don’t have the key. In this session, we seek to contextualize these presumptions via informational sessions and interactive panel discussions.

However, a career is much more than one step. How does one capitalize on the opportunities offered by the now opened door?

To this end, in this session, we also hope to provide insight on what opportunities for professional growth lie ahead upon entering the public sector. Operational government meteorologists and hydrologists are encouraged to share their experiences as aspiring and earlier career professionals, providing a glimpse into the journeys that led them to their current positions. In particular, we welcome stories of overcoming adversity, leveraging unique skill sets, or embarking on an unconventional path to achieve career goals.
