Description:
As a science-based services and stewardship organization, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is committed to fulfilling its mission by continuously enhancing its products and services. While research findings have broad benefits, research value comes from real-world application, specifically when practitioners turn knowledge into action.
To bridge the gap between research and practice, NOAA has developed and refined a suite of policies, processes, and pipelines (e.g., testbeds) to facilitate and monitor research and development. While NOAA has recently made considerable efforts to share information about their transition process through various outreach and engagement opportunities with the weather community, less is known about how other members of the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise transition research knowledge to practice within their respective organizations. Therefore, this session aims to bring together various expert groups to foster a deeper understanding of their unique strategies for transitioning research knowledge into their day-to-day operations.
Invited presentations from representatives in NOAA, broadcast meteorology, emergency management, private sector companies, other government agencies, and potentially practitioners from other sectors will provide attendees diverse perspectives on the variety of transition processes. These presentations and a subsequent short panel discussion will offer valuable insights into the unique approaches, challenges, and successes encountered by different stakeholders in moving research knowledge into practical applications within their respective sectors.
By learning from each other's experiences and practices, attendees will have the opportunity to strengthen their own transition processes and obtain insights into how various expert groups transition research to practice. This knowledge exchange not only fosters learning but also aims to equip physical and social science researchers with the skills to develop outputs that seamlessly integrate into practitioner workspaces, ultimately amplifying the impact of research within the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise. Don't miss this valuable opportunity to broaden your understanding, and exchange ideas, on transitioning research into professional spaces across diverse sectors in our Weather, Water and Climate community.
