Vorticity Dynamics of Long-lived Squall Lines

Ming Xue, CAPS/Univ. of Oklahoma, Norman, OK

The role of environmental shear in the promotion and maintenance of intense long-lived squall lines is studied using a vorticity-based numerical model with parameterized microphysics. The initial distributions of vorticity in different layers as well as the generation of vorticity by baroclinic process are partitioned and evolved separately in the model. The contributions by these components to the overall circulation are examined and new insights are gained.
