Precipitation forecasts versus analysis for selected IOP wet cases

Manfred Dorninger, University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria; and R. Steinacker, M. Ratheiser, and I. Groehn

The paper presents a detailed comparison of precipitation forecasts of meso-beta; and meso-gamma; models with the results from two different analysis methods. The high resolution precipitation data for MAP-IOP cases are used for the analysis. The comparison is carried out in terms of area means over the target areas Lago Maggiore and NE-Italian/Slovenia as well as correlations of the different precipitation fields are determined. Further the actual precipitation is evaluated. Models used are the ECMWF operational model, Aladin, MC2 and COAMPS. For the analysis the precipitation fields by Frei and Häller and the results of the Vienna Enhanced Resolution Analysis (VERA) are used. The main aim of this study is to show the capability of operational and scientific models to deal with orographic precipitation. The high resolution precipitation data set for the wet MAP-IOP cases gives an excellent opportunity for this intercomparison.
