The Helvey Stratospheric Mountain Wave Measurements—A Review

PAPER WITHDRAWN

L. J. Ehernberger, NASA/Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA

In May of 1963 flight measurements of the Sierra Wave propagating to 20 km and producing turbulent layers in the lower stratosphere were accomplished and reported by Roger Helvey. Klieforth and Edinger provided flight project direction and technical analysis recommendations. A brief review of the flight experience and Helvey's diagnoses of the data is presented. Comparisons with 2-D wave simulation and the implications for planning future aircraft surveys of wave amplitude and turbulence intensity in the lower and mid-stratosphere are also presented.
