Pressure Gradients in the MAP Brenner Pass Data
Fred J. Kopp, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City, SD; and C. L. Hartsel and P. Smith
The Taylor-series approach for determining gradients in complex terrain, described in Kopp et al. (J. Appl. Meteor., Oct. 2001), is applied to MAP surface pressure data across the Brenner Pass. The technique separates horizontal and vertical gradients in a physically and mathematically consistent way. Data from different combinations of Brenner Pass stations permit multiple first or second order fits to evaluate the consistency of the results, with additional independent stations for verification. Higher-order fits are also possible.
