Based on the nine foehn events which occurred during MAP experiment, a phenomenology study of the foehn in the Rhine Valley has been carried out from the analysis of the experimental data and the high resolution simulation realized with MESO-NH model. The role of the different scales, from the synoptic scale to the turbulence one will be presented, through the analysis of steering parameters. This study has been carried out from the data of the radiosoundings, ground stations, MERLIN IV aircraft, two UHF and VHF profilers, and one sodar. Different aspects involved in the process of the foehn have been tackled with experimental and simulated data:
(i) Synoptic situation,
(ii) Flow regime: blocking, upwind and downwind flows characteristics, origin of the air inducing the Rhine Valley foehn wind,
(iii) mesoscale 2D structure: temporal and spatial aspect of the penetration of the foehn within the Rhine Valley,
(iv) 1D/2D/3D turbulent structures.
