Heavy Precipitation in SE Alps during IOP 8, 9, 10, 11
From October 21 Th to 27 Th, 1999 almost continuous precipitation occurred in SE Alps (NE Italy, NW Slovenia). The main reason was moist and warm southwesterly winds, which caused orographically induced rainfall. In many station over 300 mm of total accumulation was measured in 5 days periode.
The most intense precipitation events happened on October 24th when precipitation rate of 125 mm/24h was measured at the southern slopes of Julian Alps (Uceja) and on October 26th when 175 mm/24h was measured in central Julian Alps (Log pod Mangartom). In these two cases the majority of precipitation was caused by destabilization of orographically ascending air masses and by cold front, that triggered quasy-stationary convection and hourly precipitation rates reaching up to 50 mm on several stations. Main causes for the events are investigated and significance of various triggering effects are discussed using detailed diagnosis of upper air measurements and spatial distribution of precipitation. The characteristics of the spatial distribution of precipitation are discussed
