Drizzle in stratocumulus: observations and model results
Robert Wood, The Met Office, Bracknell, Berks., United Kingdom
Aircraft observations with a focus upon drizzle formation are presented from 12 flights in stratocumulus clouds. The clouds exhibited a considerable range of liquid water path, droplet concentration and drizzle rate. Several aspects of the drizzle are described including its microphysics, spatial variability and potential for depletion of cloud liquid water content. A detailed microphysical model which includes turbulent transport is used in an attempt to simulate the drizzle process in the observed clouds. Successes and failures of the model are presented. Finally, aspects of the parameterization of drizzle in shallow layer clouds are discussed.
