Observation of the Microstructure of mixed phase clouds

The knowledge on the microstructure of mixed phase clouds is important for both applied and theoretical cloud physics. This work presents an extended study of microphysics of liquid, mixed phase, and glaciated clouds from in-situ measurements. The primary interest of this work is related to the study of TWC, IWC, particle size and concentration versus phase composition of clouds. The data were collected from National Research Council (NRC) of Canada Convair-580 during five flight campaigns during the period 1994-2000. It was found that the distribution of ice water fraction (m3=IWC/TWC) has minimum in the range 0.1< m3<0.9, and two maxima for liquid clouds (m3<0.1) and ice clouds (m3>0.9).
