A comparison of an interactive and noninteractive approach to mesoscale forecasting using the IOP-2B of MAP

The Global Environmental Multiscale (GEM) model used operationally by the Canadian Meteorological Centre uses an interactive approach to mesoscale forecasting. In this approach, the domain of simulation is the entire globe, yet the grid points of the computational grid are concentrated over an area of interest. The advantages of this approach include a full interaction of the flow inside and outside the area of interest in a dynamically consistent fashion.

A noninteractive, limited area version of GEM has also been developped. In this case, there are no feed back mechanism between the inner high resolution domain, and the outer domain.

Using IOP-2B, a comparison of the two approaches will be presented.
