Hail damage to Tile Roofing

Timothy P. Marshall, Haag Engineering Co., Carrollton, TX; and R. F. Herzog, S. J. Morrison, and S. R. Smith

This paper will summarize various tests that the authors have conducted with regard to determining hail damage to clay, concrete, and fiber-cement tiles. A specially designed launcher was manufactured to propel ice stones of various sizes and velocities at different roof tiles. The size ice stones needed to damage the tiles were documented along with the characteristics of such damage. These results will be compared to actual hail damage observed in the field. We will also discuss how hail damage differs from the effects of weathering and erosion on tiles.
