A wind hazard detection system has been developed by the National Center for Atmospheric Research for the Juneau International Airport. Alert algorithms are based on wind regime-dependent regressions of anemometer and wind profiler measurements. The regressors that characterize the relationship between wind hazards and wind sensors have been determined from data collected during several field projects. This presentation will describe the end products of the hazard detection system, which form the basis for a series of user displays. Each group of end-users, such as dispatchers, air traffic controllers, and flight service personnel, will have somewhat different needs for wind information. A series of displays will be available to the end-user: An alphanumeric summary of current wind conditions and alert activity; a geographic planview summarizing current wind conditions; a one-hour time series of anemometer data; and a one-hour time series of wind profiler data. The types of alerts and their prioritization will be addressed, as well as the targeted user community. We will also discuss the flexible design of the system, along with data update and latency issues.
