Differential reflectivity (ZDR) information provided by polarimetric radar can allow the discrimination of liquid hydrometeors above the zero degree Celsius level within or on the flanks of convective updrafts. This "ZDR column" signature has been observed on numerous occasions on the NSSL's prototype polarimetric WSR-88D. Forecasters at the National Weather Service WFO in Norman have used ZDR columns in analysis and short-range prediction of convective modes and trends. Potential advantages to aviation interests of the real-time use of the ZDR column signature are explored.
