Calculating EDR from aircraft wind data during flight in and out of Juneau, AK: Techniques and challenges associated with non-straight and level flight patterns

Aircraft wind data during departure and approaches out of the Juneau Alaska airport were used for calculations of Eddy Dissipation Rate (EDR). This paper discusses the techniques used to calculate the EDR estimates, with focus on the challenges of using aircraft wind data from non-cruising altitude, straight and level flight. Discussed in detail are some problems encountered in a typical research aircraft data set and the methods employed to detect these problems. Techniques used to improve the data quality, to produce reliable estimates of aircraft hazard for the Juneau Alaska region, are explained. These efforts resulted in more reliable, reasonable estimates for EDR hazards calculated from aircraft wind data.
