Session 1.2 A Comparison of ISNet Data with Radar Data for Tornadic and Potentially Tornadic Storms in Northeast Colorado

As discussed in accompanying papers, ISNet observations may have potential value in helping forecasters issue tornado warnings by adding unique information to that available from the WSR-88D Doppler radars. In this paper we take a detailed look at a couple of cases from northeastern Colorado, within the forecast warning area of the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office at Boulder, Colorado. The radar data for selected tornadic storms will be examined in as fine a detail as possible for all elevation angles and this information combined with information received from the ISNet for the same storms. Time-height cross-sections of radar velocity will be compared in time space with the signals from ISNet, and where available observations from storm spotters, in an attempt to more specifically determine what the ISNet is detecting when compared to what the forecaster sees with Doppler radar. With this data set we hope to gain a better understanding of the signals from ISNet, and whether they can add lead time and other important input to the forecaster for making tornado warning decisions.
