VALIDATION OF GOES AND MODIS ATMOSPHERIC PRODUCTS AND RADIANCES USING DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ATMOSPHERIC RADIATION (DOE ARM) MEASUREMENT DATA

GOES and MODIS temperature, moisture, integrated water vapor, cloud top heights, and radiances are currently being validated in near realtime using DOE ARM remotely sensed and in situ data sets. The University of Wisconsin's Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) receives direct broadcast GOES and EOS Terra satellite data sets. This poster will give an overview of several validation techniques developed at the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Satellite Studies (CIMSS) using DOE ARM data. Since DOE ARM data has been provided continuously over a number of years, extensive seasonal validation of satellite radiances and derived products has been made possible. Preliminary validation between GOES and groundbased microwave radiometer integrated water vapor data indicate good mesoscale agreement at hourly validation times. GOES cloud top altitude validation using micropulse lidar and millimeter cloud radar data show high measurement correlation.
