A Proposed Multiangle Satellite Dataset Using GEO, LEO and Triana

Simultaneous multiangle viewing of the Earth has recently been achieved with multiangle satellite instruments such as POLDER, MISR and ATSR. These multiviewing satellites are useful in estimating cloud heights and optical depths as well as other multiangle studies. However, they are limited in spatial and temporal sampling. Every hour, the Triana satellite with the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) will provide a near nadir view of 83-98% of the sunlit Earth at 9 different solar wavelengths. Because of Triana L1 orbit, the EPIC will view the Earth at scattering angles between 165 and 177 degrees. This paper discusses the proposed multiangle dataset using 5 GEO satellites and 3 NOAA AVHRR polar orbiters. The imager data for each satellite will be matched to the Triana EPIC view within 15 minutes. Hourly matched multiangle satellite datasets will be produced. Simulated examples using MODIS data are presented.
