NOAA's current and future environmental satellite programs (Invited Presentation)
Scott B. Gudes, NOAA, Washington, DC
Part of NOAA's mission is to describe and predict changes in the Earth's environment in order to save lives and property. To that end, NOAA operates the Nation's civilian operational environmental satellites. The NOAA satellites are the mainstay of the Nation's weather information system, providing timely environmental data to Federal, state, and local governments and private users. From their initial use as a meteorological tool, the use of satellites have expanded to climate monitoring, ocean remote sensing coastal applications, and now disaster monitoring. As we continue to develop new useful operational applications for our current satellites, NOAA is already planning its next generation of environmental satellites.
