The satellite winds derivation algorithm (Windco) has evolved from a subjective, labor-intensive process to a fully automated system for targeting, tracking, editing and quality control. Today winds from this system are used operationally by forecasters, as input to global forecast models and by researchers worldwide.

A summary of the current state of the winds algorithm will be presented, including design and function, examples of recent applications and discussion of proposed directions for future development.
