Tropical precipitable water climatology for equatorial waves
Paul E. Roundy, Penn State Univ., University Park, PA
Anomalies of the NASA water vapor project (NVAP) total column precipitable water (PW) data are analyzed to study the impacts of equatorial waves on PW. Spectra are given for the northern and southern hemispheres separately, covering the region from 15 N to 15 S latitude. Spectra of equatorially symmetric and antisymmetric decompositions are also given. Spectra are diagramed according to convectively coupled equatorial wave types and data are Fourier filtered accordingly to produce variance climatology maps without using equatorial symmetry constraints. Results reveal that the northern hemisphere dominates most signals, with the main exception being the 40-60 day oscillation.
