Denitrification of the Polar Stratosphere

During polar winter, nitric acid is removed from the stratosphere via sequestration onto and subsequent sedimentation of polar stratospheric clouds. It is understood that the nitric acid is carried from the stratosphere by a small number of particles that have frozen forming low vapor-pressure phases of H2O and nitric acid. We will discuss the mechanisms and observational evidence that have been put forward for nucleation of these solid particles in the stratosphere.
