Isolation from planetary wave breaking of the lower tropical stratosphere
Kirill Semeniuk, MIT, Cambridge, MA; and R. A. Plumb
The planetary wave "surf zone" is confined outside the lower tropical stratosphere with a PV mixing barrier in the subtropics. This gives rise to the tropical pipe behavior of diabatic transport in the tropics. Previous studies found that radiative relaxation leads to extratropical confinement of planetary wave breaking in a shallow water model framework. We revisit this problem using a primitive equations model and consider the effect of the "cold trap" above the tropical tropopause.
