A wintertime precipitation system is simulated using the MM5 mesoscale model with the Goddard microphysics scheme. The structure and organization of the precipitation system, the distribution of the different precipitation hydrometeors, and the dynamical and microphysical features of this precipitation system are examined using the model simulation. The TRMM precipitation radar and microwave imager provide observations of the structure of the precipitation system. The PR-measured reflectivities and hydrometeors characteristics inferred from the microwave brightness temperatures at different frequencies are used to validate the model simulation and evaluate the performance of the Goddard microphysics scheme. This validation/evaluation effort is then used to guide improvements to the microphysics parameterization.
