Vortex Dipole for an Interfacial Tropopause

David J. Muraki, Simon Fraser Univ., Burnaby, BC, Canada; and C. Snyder

A new class of exact dipole solutions have been developed based upon the modon construction applied to a surface quasigeostrophic model. These vortex pairs can be considered as idealized disturbances propagating on a tropopause interface between two uniform PV layers. Such dipolar structures are commonly obtained in computations of vortex turbulence. Issues related to gravity wave generation and next-order balanced corrections are also addressed.
