9.1 Atmospheric and Oceanic Tracer Transport (Invited Presentation)

Thursday, 7 June 2001: 10:00 AM
Darryn W. Waugh, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD

In this talk I will discuss aspects of tracer transport in the atmosphere and oceans, focusing on possible analogous processes occurring in the stratosphere and deep oceans. One aspect to be discussed is the cascade to small scales and production of fine-scale tracer structures ('filaments' and 'layers') through advection by the large (quasi-horizontal) flow. The processes controlling the large-scale distribution of tracers, and the relationship between transit tracers and the ``age spectra" (transit-time distributions), will also be discussed.
