The Fronts and Atlantic Storm-Track EXperiment (FASTEX) was an international field project which took place in January and February 1997 to make detailed observations of extratropical cyclones over the North Atlantic.

Intense observation period 18 (20-24 February) is an explosive cold air cyclogenesis over the Labrador Sea. This case involves one of the major tropopause disturbance observed during the FASTEX period.

The objective of the talk is to present the relation between the tropopause perturbation and the cyclogenesis using a potential vorticity inversion method coupled to the french model ARPEGE (meteo-France) and diagnostic interpretations.
