Eddy resolving simulations of topographically induced rotors and internal gravity wave breaking

Craig M. Smith, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR; and E. D. Skyllingstad

The dynamics of topographically induced rotors and internal gravity wave breaking events are explored using an eddy resolving numerical model. Results from the simulations show that turbulent perturbation act to break down the stagnation layer that develops above a strong surface jet on the lee of the slope. Internal gravity wave breaking leads to a buoyant source of TKE aloft, while shear production of TKE dominates at the top and bottom of the stagnation zone. Eventually, the TKE in the stagnation zone is advected downstream and into the rotor. In the rotor itself, turbulent perturbations act to enhance the strength and height of the rotor.wrf recording  Recorded presentation
