Mountaineering Meteorology and Decision-Making
Madison J. Post, NOAA Scientist (retired), Boulder, CO
Weather is a huge factor for the safety and success of any mountaineering expedition. Experiences in Nepal (on Ama Dablam and Annapurna), in Tanzania (Mt. Kilimanjaro), in Alaska (Denali), and on numerous Colorado summits will be discussed. Local meteorological knowledge, often gained on the fly in these complex terrain settings, has proven to be an invaluable supplement for numerical forecasts, helping the climbing team's meteorologists to refine the forecasts and keep the team safe.
