A new algorithm for dust detection over water utilizing the AVHRR imager

Amato Evan, CIMSS/Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, WI; and A. K. Heidinger and M. J. Pavolonis

Recently NOAA/NESDIS has begun an effort to improve the data record from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). Currently, airborne soil derived aerosols advected over the world's oceans are an obstacle to proper operation of global cloud masking products and sea surface temperature retrievals. Therefore a new algorithm for oceanic global dust detection has been developed. This new algorithm, validation and preliminary results will be shown from a limited reprocessing of the entire AVHRR data-set.
