The Automated Meteorological Profiling System (AMPS) uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to track standard rawinsonde balloon packages. The AMPS Low Resolution Flight Element (LRFE) will replace the Meteorological Sounding System (MSS) that currently provides thermodynamic profiles for space launch operations at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). An analysis is presented which establishes the thermodynamic operational comparability between the two systems. The results will then be compared to Space Shuttle launch and landing accuracy requirements for thermodynamic profile measurements.
