Applying FX Connect to the Prototype Aviation Collaborative Effort at the Fort Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center
Dennis M. Rodgers, NOAA/FSL, Boulder, CO; and T. Amis
FX Connect (FXC) is a real-time meteorological display system with collaborative capabilities. FXC is the main component of a development project which explores distributing workstation and server functions over different remote locations. A unique feature of FXC is that it can accommodate the interaction of forecasters at different locations through a graphical user interface and Internet connections. When connected to an AWIPS server, FXC allows the display of selected data and imagery over which graphics may be created, manipulated, and viewed by remotely located collaboration participants. FXC features include the conventional capabilities of: interactive display manipulation (zoom, pan, toggle overlays, overlay color); display of diverse data sets (images, graphics, and text); interactive display generation (cross sections, time series, time/height, model soundings); extensive manual graphic and annotation tools; display procedures. Advanced capabilities of FXC include: slide creation and presentation; chat capability; Internet access to WWW products; creation and display of JPEG images; independent or collaborative mode of operation.
The purpose of the Prototype Aviation Collaboration Effort (PACE) is to design an operational test for exploring and demonstrating effective employment of developing science and technology in weather support to Traffic Management Unit (TMU) decision makers. FXC will be used in PACE to explore methodologies for promoting efficient exchange of meteorological information and collaboration in the development and production of new briefing products for the TMU. Progress in these areas will be reported and initial results will be demonstrated.
