The Air Force Combat Climatology Center (AFCCC) uses the Advanced Climate Modeling and Environmental Simulations (ACMES) model to produce high-resolution gridded climatologies for the Department of Defense. Running the mesoscale model at 11 and 44 km resolution and summarizing the data at gridpoints produces the climatologies. This paper compares ACMES 11 km gridded temperature and precipitation climatologies to point climatologies generated from NWS Cooperative Observer Program data in Utah. This is the first time that the operational version of ACMES is verified against a high density, highly quality controlled dataset that uses the same period of record as the model. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons between the model and the observed climatologies are made to assess the accuracy and usefulness of the climatologies.
