JP1.17 Initial implementation of a Mississippi Mesonet within the context of COOP Modernization

Monday, 20 June 2005
Loren D. White, Jackson State Univ., Jackson, MS; and E. Matlack

The efforts to build a comprehensive world-class mesonet in Mississippi will be described, with particular attention to coordination with the National Weather Service's "COOP Modernization" program. The mature network will consist of approximately 120 stations evenly spread around the state, transmitting one-minute data in near real-time. To meet the varied needs of forecasters, researchers, and private data users, a comprehensive suite of instruments will be installed at each site. Primary reference heights are 2 m and 10 m above site elevation. Sensors compatible with the Soil Climate Analysis Network are used for soil temperature and moisture at five depths. Backup sensors provide redundancy to ensure data quality. Example data from currently installed stations and the status of network installation will be shown. We will also discuss network building strategies such as local agency participation, GIS utilization, and communications.
