Prospects for Using Climate Predictions in Biological and Ecological Developments
James D. Laver, NOAA/NWS/NCEP/CPC, Camp Springs, MD
The U. S. Climate Prediction Center (CPC), is one of nine centers within the National Centers for Environmental Prediction of the U. S. National Weather Service. CPC’s mission includes development and delivery of predictions on time scales ranging from one week to one year in advance. The CPC works closely with U. S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Centers and Laboratories, and other agencies and institutions, to develop and improve products related to simple parameters such as temperature and precipitation, as well as more complex indices related to drought, El Niño, and ultravoilet radiation. The CPC endeavors to build better understanding and predictability of weather and climate linkages, extremes, hazards and trends. With existing and new partners the CPC expects to continue developing new routine and special (forecast of opportunity) predictions which are applicable to multiple disciplines such as biometeorology and ecology.
