Lidar observed Quasi-Biennial Oscillation in temperature from stratosphere to mesosphere at Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii (19.5N, 155.6W)

The quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) is the dominant feature in the equatorial stratosphere with a period approximately 28 months and downward phase progression with a speed of ~1km/month [Baldwind et al., 2001]. The Jet propulsion Laboratory (JPL) differential absorption lidar (DIAL) and Rayleigh/Raman lidar at Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO), Hawaii (19.5°N, 155.6°W) were operated for the regular nighttime data acquisition of ozone and temperature since 1993. Here, we will use the 14-year monthly mean temperature vertical profiles observed by the JPL lidar at MLO to study the QBO phenomena from stratosphere to mesosphere. The results will be presented followed by the discussion and conclusion.
