NOAA / NESDIS satellite operations, product generation and distribution overview

Thomas M. Renkevens, NOAA/NESDIS, Camp Springs, MD; and B. Hughes

The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Environmental Data Information Service (NESDIS) is to provide timely access to global environmental data from satellites and other sources to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation's economy, security, environment, and quality of life. To fulfill its responsibilities, NESDIS • acquires and manages the Nation's operational environmental satellites, • operates the NOAA National Data Centers, • provides data and information services including Earth system monitoring, • performs official assessments of the environment, and • conducts related research

This presentation will provide an update of NESDIS satellites, an overview of NESDIS real time satellite operations, data processing and product generation, data and product distribution, unique satellite services, and customer services. Satellite data and product access will be covered including distribution and access of GOES data through the Man-computer Data Analysis System (McIDAS) and the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS). Included will be an overview of real time satellite data access from anonymous ftp servers, GIS servers, various web pages, and controlled access servers for access to full resolution scientific imagery. Finally, briefly discussed will be how NESDIS manages these many streams of satellite data and processing systems, and the management of user services.
