Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS)

The Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) is a WMO-led international collaboration aiming at improving the calibration accuracy of operational satellite instruments through inter-calibration. NOAA is an actively participating member of GSICS. In addition to chairing the GSICS Executive Panel since inception, NOAA has been hosting the GISCS Coordination Center (GCC), chairing the GSICS Research Working Group (GRWG, 2007-2009) and Data Management Working Group (GDWG, 2010-2012), and conducting research and routine operation of inter-calibration at NOAA's GSICS Processing and Research Center (GPRC). A unique feature of NOAA GPRC is that GSICS is not only used to monitor and correct for calibration bias of operational satellite instruments, but also as a powerful tool to aid in the detection, diagnosis, and resolution of instrument anomalies. This capability has recently been extended to the GEO Sounder instruments and plays an important role during the GOES-14 post-launch science test (PLT). This paper will brief on all these GSICS activities at NOAA.
