P9.10 Progress toward satellite-based atmospheric turbulence interest field detection

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) has been conducting research into satellite-based detection of areas the where possibility of atmospheric turbulence is enhanced due to convection, tropopause folds, and/or mountain waves. We have been collaborating with National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) turbulence team, which is responsible for the NOAA Aviation Weather Center (AWC) Graphical Turbulence Guidance (GTG) nowcast product to identify possible areas in which satellite-based turbulence interest fields would provide value added information. This paper will present progress made in deriving satellite-based turbulence interest fields as the GTG moves from CONUS to global coverage forecasts of turbulence.
