The location and downstream intensification of storm tracks in an idealized moist GCM

Yohai Kaspi, Caltech, Pasadena, CA; and T. Schneider

We study the dynamics of storm tracks using an idealized moist GCM. By introducing zonal asymmetries, we create regions of strong baroclinicity and enhanced storm tracks in the GCM. We study the relation between the level of baroclinicity and storm track intensity, and the mechanisms that control the downstream intensification and evolution of the storm tracks. Particularly we focus on the effects of moisture on the evolution, extent, and location of the storm track.
