Simulation of the morning transition boundary layer

Robert John Beare, University of Exeter, Exeter, United Kingdom

Previous Large-eddy simulation studies relating to the morning transtion boundary layer focus on the role of the entraining convective boundary layer. However, there remains the unresolved issue of the role of the surface inversion and wind profile remnant from the late evening stable boundary layer (SBL). Observational studies have indicated the important role of shear in the transition, but little corresponding large-eddy simulation has been done on this issue. This work explores how SBL shear influences the morning transition boundary layer, using large-eddy simulation. The challenging issue of a small domain for the SBL and a large domain for the convective boundary layer is solved by using multiple domains and appropriate matching of the sub-grid model.
