The northern node of the wintertime North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) underwent a pronounced shift in longitude in the 20-year period of 1958-1978 compared to the following 20-year period. We are currently building a statistical model the parameters of which have direct relevance to the shifting center of action. This will allow us to examine the shift on shorter time scales and examine the associated dynamical mechanisms, which will be the focus of the presentation.
